Virtual Politics

Virtual Politics

$39.98

States like Russia and Ukraine may not have gone back to totalitarianism or the traditional authoritarian formula of stuffing the ballot box, cowing the population and imprisoning the opposition–or not obviously. But a whole industry of “political technology” has developed instead, with shadowy private firms and government “fixers” on lucrative contracts dedicated to the black arts of organizing electoral success. This book uncovers the sophisticated techniques of the “virtual” political system used to legitimize post-Soviet regimes: entire fake parties, phantom political rivals and “scarecrow” opponents. And it exposes the paramount role of the mass media in projecting these creations and in falsifying the entire political process.Wilson argues that it is not primarily economic problems that have made it so difficult to develop meaningful democracy in the former Soviet world. Although the West also has its “spin doctors,” dirty tricks, and aggressive ad campaigns, it is the unique post-Bolshevik culture of “political technology” that is the main obstacle to better governance in the region, to real popular participation in public affairs, and to the modernization of the political economy in the longer term.

After the loss of his brother/bandmate Tommy Caldwell in a serious car accident and the loss of another brother shortly thereafter, guitarist Toy Caldwell and the surviving members of the Marshall Tucker Band found it in themselves to record another record in 1981. Under the production of Tom Dowd, Dedicated is a sleek, well-polished album not unlike their previous few endeavors. The group borders the fine line between radio-friendly rock and the Southern rock sound that was so popular at the time, with songs like "Rumors Are Raging" tempering out slower, more pop-friendly songs like "Tonight's the Night" and "Love Some." Contributions from Charlie Daniels on fiddle help to give the group a lean towards the traditional country of their earlier records, but Dowd keeps the production slick and tight enough for it not to stray too much outside rock territory. The album's crown jewel unquestionably lies in its final track "Ride in Peace"; a touching farewell written and recorded in one take that stands with some of the best songs the group has ever recorded. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music GuidePerformers: Norton Buffalo - Harmonica; Charlie Daniels - Fiddle, Violin; Toy Caldwell - Guitar, Guitar (Steel), Vocals, Vocals (Background); Jerry Eubanks - Flute, Keyboards, Saxophone, Vocals, Vocals (Background); Doug Gray - Guitar, Vocals; George McCorkle - Guitar; Paul Riddle - Drums, Percussion, Vocals (Background); Franklin Wilkie - Guitar (Bass), Horn, Vocals (Background)

Dedicated to You

A fairly straight singer with a warm but cool voice, Gloria Cooper at times hints at Maxine Sullivan and Shirley Horn. The program on Dedicated to You is filled with superior obscurities taken from Don Sickler's Second Floor Music publications Sing Jazz and Sing More Jazz. Many of the songs, written by jazz musicians, received their recording debut (particularly as vocals) on this set, including numbers by John Oddo, Hank Mobley, Jon Burr, Renee Rosnes, and the late James Williams. Cooper does a fine job of adding warmth to the lyrics, also playing piano in the backup group, which on some numbers is a full sextet featuring excellent trumpet solos from Sickler. Dedicated to You, which only includes two standards among the dozen songs, shows that some fine new originals were written by jazz musicians in recent times, even if most remain unknown to the general public. Singers in need of fresh material are particularly recommended to explore this outing. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Don Sickler - Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Freddie Bryant - Guitar; Vince Cherico - Drums; Gloria Cooper - Piano, Vocals; Wayne Escoffery - Sax (Tenor), Soprano (Vocal); Tim Givens - Guitar (Bass)

After drummer Connie Kay passed away, this previously unreleased concert, recorded in Slovenia in 1960, was issued on a double CD and dedicated to him. The Modern Jazz Quartet (which also includes pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and bassist Percy Heath) is heard in surprisingly inspired form playing their usual repertoire of the time. Highlights include a 23-minute medley of John Lewis compositions, "Bag's Groove," "It Don't Mean a Thing," "Django," "How High the Moon" and "Skating in Central Park." Lewis has stated that the group never played better than during this concert. Although that statement is debatable, the MJQ certainly sounds in prime form throughout the easily recommended release. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Milt Jackson - Vibraphone; Percy Heath - Bass; Connie Kay - Drums; John Lewis - Piano

In Virtual Worlds, Benjamin Woolley examines the reality of virtual reality. He looks at the dramatic intellectual and cultural upheavals that gave birth to it, the hype that surrounds it, the people who have promoted it, and the dramatic implications of its development. Virtual reality is not simply a technology, it is a way of thinking created and promoted by a group of technologists and thinkers that sees itself as creating our future. Virtual Worlds reveals the politics and culture of these virtual realists, and examines whether they are creating reality, or losing their grasp of it. 12 photographs.

Those who design, implement, and use computer network applications are deeply involved in the processes of social and cultural change, whether or not they choose to consider these processes. Issues such as "community" and "privacy," "dependence" and "individualism" are no longer simply the province of philosophers and social scientists; they are tightly interwoven in the design and use of network applications. Virtual Individuals, Virtual Groups explores the social dimensions of the powerful computing applications that are shaping our culture. It addresses design and theoretical issues relating to groupware and other applications of computer networks. It considers computer network applications in terms of the notions of "genre" and "narrative," in a framework that is broadly applicable to the development of a wide range of computing and communication systems, such as virtual reality and multimedia.

Trombonist/arranger Slide Hampton pays tribute to the recently deceased Dizzy Gillespie during a collection mostly consisting of Dizzy's compositions. Hampton utilizes "The Jazz Masters," an all-star medium-size group also including trumpeters Jon Faddis, Roy Hargrove and Claudio Roditi, himself and Steve Turre on trombones, bass trombonist Douglas Purviance, the reeds of David Sanchez, Antonio Hart and Jimmy Heath, pianist Danilo Perez, bassist George Mraz and drummer Lewis Nash. Although there is a certain amount of predictability in their treatments of such tunes as "Bebop," "Tour De Force" and "A Night In Tunisia" (and "Overture" after a few song quotes becomes "Blue & Boogie"), the remarkable lineup of musicians cannot be passed over lightly. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Jon Faddis - Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Roy Hargrove - Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Slide Hampton - Trombone; Antonio Hart - Sax (Alto), Sax (Soprano); Jimmy Heath - Sax (Tenor), Saxophone; George Mraz - Bass; Lewis Nash - Drums; Danilo Perez - Piano; Douglas Purviance - Bass, Trombone, Tuba; Claudio Roditi - Trumpet; David Sanchez - Flute, Sax (Soprano), Sax (Tenor); Steve Turre - Trombone

3D Virtual Applications: Applications with Virtual Inhabited 3D Worlds deals with the use of virtual inhabited 3D spaces in different domains of society. (Other volumes deal with interaction, production methodology and space.) From focusing on virtual reality (a reality into which users and objects from the real world should be moved) we are increasingly focusing on augmented reality (i.e. on moving computers out into the reality of real users, objects and activities). This book deals with the use of virtual inhabited 3D spaces in both contexts. Based on the structuring of the application domains, this book looks at the use of VR and augmented reality in the following major application domains: - Production oriented applications - use of VR and augmented reality for control of complex production plants, for navigation support (ships, cars, aeroplanes) and for support of collaborative work processes - Communication support applications - virtual spaces are used for supporting communication in learning environments and for support of organisational communication. Also virtual spaces are used for supporting the navigation of people in public spaces, i.e. as maps, planning tools - Scientific applications - use of 3D models for medical research; use of dynamic models for representation of abstract concepts and ideas (data-mining applications); use of dynamic 3D models for simulating biological or social processes - Artistic and cultural applications - the construction of stages representing concepts and/or emotions

Virtual Machines

Virtual Machines

Virtual Machine technology applies the concept of virtualization to an entire machine, circumventing real machine compatibility constraints and hardware resource constraints to enable a higher degree of software portability and flexibility. Virtual machines are rapidly becoming an essential element in computer system design. They provide system security, flexibility, cross-platform compatibility, reliability, and resource efficiency. Designed to solve problems in combining and using major computer system components, virtual machine technologies play a key role in many disciplines, including operating systems, programming languages, and computer architecture. For example, at the process level, virtualizing technologies support dynamic program translation and platform-independent network computing. At the system level, they support multiple operating system environments on the same hardware platform and in servers.Historically, individual virtual machine techniques have been developed within the specific disciplines that employ them (in some cases they aren't even referred to as "virtual machines"), making it difficult to see their common underlying relationships in a cohesive way. In this text, Smith and Nair take a new approach by examining virtual machines as a unified discipline. Pulling together cross-cutting technologies allows virtual machine implementations to be studied and engineered in a well-structured manner. Topics include instruction set emulation, dynamic program translation and optimization, high level virtual machines (including Java and CLI), and system virtual machines for both single-user systems and servers. *Examines virtual machine technologies across the disciplines that use them-operating systems, programming languages and computer architecture-defining a new and unified discipline.*Reviewed by principle researchers at Microsoft, HP, and by other industry research groups.*Written by two authors who combine several decades of expertise in computer system research and development, both in academia and industry.

Imagine a life of virtual reality -- a childhood contained in a controlled environment, with no human contact. Corgan has been genetically engineered for quick reflexes, high intelligence, and physical superiority. He is unbeatable in battle. But he lives his life in a lonely module. What is a real sunset like? Or a friend? When he meets fellow teens Sharla and Brig, Corgan begins to doubt the Federation, whose decisions he has unquestioningly obeyed. Life outside virtual reality may be for him. His fourteen years of training are about to end as the real challenge approaches. But he can't lose focus now: He must win a virtual war, or the Western Hemisphere will be lost forever.
