Work From
July 28, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

Working at a job, whatever it is, is a social obligation as much as an economic one. Don't believe me? How often as a child did you hear someone refer to someone else as a "layabout"; how often were you told of the benefits of hard work; how often have you yourselves done the same thing?
Yes, most of us need to work to stay alive (food, shelter, providing for family, a few pleasures); indeed only the very fortunate do not. And, apropos of that lot, aren't they the "idle rich"? Sure, we envy them, because not many of us actually want to work hard all the time or for too long or at all. But we also despise them for the fact that they haven't earned their good fortune, but married into or inherited it (lucky buggers!). The only people we don't call idlers are those few lucky enough to have won Lotto, which we're all working hard to do, too.
Here's the point though - how many of us, being rich through means not of our own, would have the social temerity not to do something? To just, well, do nothing, at least nothing productive. Great wealth means not only that the possessors of it don't actually work as in earning a living, but they don't do any other work as well which they not only used to do but often enjoyed doing: their own gardens ("Jack's so good, and cheap too!"), washing their cars ("The carwash at the BP is great and so cheap!"), doing their own housework (Trudi's very thorough, and so cheap!") etc.
Do you see the common thread here? Yes, in my experience the very well off not only do less and less other than leisure, which they work hard at, but they become very mindful of the cost of everything. I have a rule of thumb - the richer they get, the meaner (Bill Gates and myriads of others the exception).
However, I digress. It takes a certain courage to thumb your nose at society's expectations, work-wise. It's all very well to be rich as Croesus, but it's not all very well to flaunt the fact.
All of which leads to certain moral ponderings on my part. What would I be like, if I were rich (I wish hard that I was)? And the answer is simple. Poor? Tough. No job? Tough. No new car every year? Tough. (Well, not exactly, I do give and have always given, to charity, and my wife have agreed that when the Lotto fairy touched us on the shoulder, 10% will go to charities). But, regarding everyone else, too bad.
The main problem I have with wealth is that I don't have it. After almost 4 decades of hard work, mostly what I have is an aversion to more of the same! So, I'm working hard to find something I don't have to work hard at. And, even with the great and glorious web, it is damned hard work to find something that produces sufficient income to keep me and my wife in the style to which I would like to become accustomed.
You will have heard the expression, "there's no such thing as a free lunch". As a person who has paid for far too many lunches in his life, I agree while still trying hard to disprove it. The internet is full of get rich schemes, none of which require any capital, experience, education, knowhow or, in some cases, a pulse. I, like many of you, have checked this stuff out, and most of them do require capital, experience, education and knowhow.
I have recently become a fledgling affiliate marketer, and I have had to learn a tremendous amount of things and devote a whole lot of time to even get started. I'm really working hard. Trouble is, because there are millions and millions of internet pages, it is incredibly difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff, the men from the boys, the wine form the water.
I believe I have got a couple of good things now, and have started a Clickbank account (I have not earned enough to pay for a lunch, so I'm going to free ones) and I'm hoping and, in new age parlance, expecting to do real good. After all, if I didn't shouldn't I buy a lawn-mowing round? At least that is outdoor work, healthy and good for you.
But, wouldn't it also be such...hard work?

At Work $25.48 Work is at the core of human existence: it is sustenance, security, survival. Through work we find fulfillment, dignity, and affiliation; conversely, we risk criticism and dissatisfaction and, at worst, degradation and alienation. Not surprisingly, the story of labor—which comprises passionate struggles and triumphs as well as dehumanizing forces—has figured largely in the arts. _At Work: The Art of California Labor_ delivers a powerful examination of labor history in California since the turn of the twentieth century. This is a visual journey that follows early events and conditions, from the rise of statewide organized labor to the changing demographics of the wartime workforce; from the zenith of the California Labor School to the farm workers' movement; from the disenfranchisement of workers in the service economy to the potent effects of globalization felt at the end of the twentieth century. This compilation of images provides a heady insight into one of the most fundamental components of our daily lives and shows how our collective identity has evolved over time. |

The Work $34.98 Insanity is contagious. How else do you explain five fresh-faced Minnesotans who were crazy enough to believe, way back in 1981, that a start-up agency in Minneapolis could fire a warning shot of creativity across the bow of Madison Avenue? How else do you explain these same five camping out, uninvited, in the lobby of their first new business pitch with a portfolio full of ads, and then actually winning the damn thing-against 16 other agencies? How else do you explain the restless clients, big and small, who quickly came running? Or the hundreds of amazingly talented people who flocked here to be part of this crazy experiment on the prairie? From the world's largest bank to the Episcopal Church; from The Wall Street Journal to Rolling Stone, from Hush Puppies to United Airlines. Celebrating 25 years of creativity that has helped drive results and ultimately outsmart the competition. |

The Flight from Work $34.48 Goran Palm - a well-known Swedish writer and poet - went to work incognito in one of the factories of LM Ericsson. He did this to obtain a better understanding of the life of the manual worker in a large factory, and to gain from that understanding a more mature political view. Going into a factory and joining a particular work group enabled the author to see beyond the monolithic idea of the working class and to know and appreciate his fellow workers as individuals. The writing is more literary than scientific, the language is concrete, and portraits, satire and dialogue are mixed to provide a full and lively picture into which the development of Palm's ideas is inserted. His particular concern is the worker's tendency to regard work as a depressing overture to the leisure time constantly in his thoughts. This is what Palm means by The Flight from Work. |

Steal Stuff from Work $11.73 Steal Stuff From Work is a novel about bad waiters who take things too far. Cyrus and Kemp confess a mutual burning compulsion toward vocational kleptomania. Revolution is in our cubicles; the program herein renders a volcano from a mountain of waste. |

From Charity to Social Work $37 Mary E. Richmond (1861-1928) was a contemporary of Jane Addams and an influential leader in the American charity organization movement. In this biography--the first in-depth study of Richmond's life and work--Elizabeth N. Agnew examines the contributions of this important, if hitherto undervalued, woman to the field of charity and to its development into professional social work. Orphaned at a young age and largely self-educated, Richmond initially entered charity work as a means of self-support but came to play a vital role in transforming philanthropy--previously seen as a voluntary expression of individual altruism--into a valid, organized profession. Her career took her from charity organization leadership in Baltimore and Philadelphia to an executive position with the prestigious Russell Sage Foundation in New York City. Richmond's progressive civic philosophy of social work was largely informed by the Social Gospel movement. She strove to find practical applications of the teachings of Christianity in response to the social problems that accompanied rapid industrialization, urbanization, and poverty. At the same time, her tireless efforts and personal example as a woman created an appealing, if ambiguous, path for other professional women. A century later her legacy continues to echo in social work and welfare reform. |

Work from the Inside Out $3.48 Everyone hopes for a rewarding and fulfilling career, but the day-to-day reality can be just the opposite. The routine of our jobs, office politics, and problematic projects can often be the cause of frustration, worry, and disappointment. The quest to find personal satisfaction, much less pride in our work, can be daunting. It doesn’t have to be that way. According to Nancy O’Hara, we can find meaning in our jobs—but the first thing we have to do is look within ourselves. Grounded in principles of Zen Buddhism and full of real-life stories, Work from the Inside Out presents a simple plan to reclaim your job and your life—and ultimately find the ability to truly love what you do. |

From Dependency To Work $25 This report presents the findings from one of the first evaluations of a British program to integrate drug and alcohol treatment with mental health services, education, training and employment support the From Dependency to Work (D2W) program. It provides an invaluable insight into the challenges and difficulties of integrating services in this way and highlights important lessons for central and regional government on funding and working with the voluntary sector to deliver services. With the recent launch of the Drug Interventions Program (DIP), designed to get statutory and voluntary sector agencies working together to tackle the social factors associated with drug misuse and crime, stakeholders across the country will need to develop effective multi-disciplinary working in this field. This report provides all those involved, from a strategic level to frontline practitioners, with a clearer understanding of the issues. (REPORT) |

Making Work Work $3.48 IS IT ME OR IS IT THEM? Maintaining control in today's hectic workplace is a challenge -- everything is lean, competitive, and uncertain. What does it take to survive? Making Work Work is Julie Morgenstern's most important book yet. Through the mastery of brand-new strategies, Morgenstern shows you how small changes in your thinking and behavior will help you achieve the seemingly impossible -- boost your value, increase your job security, and afford you the time to still have a life. Morgenstern has helped clients of all levels take control of their work lives in every industry: from corporations and nonprofits to government agencies and small businesses; from executives and assistants to educators and salespeople. She's learned that no matter who you are, happiness at work involves feeling appreciated, in control, successful, and in balance. And achieving that is possible. People rarely look at their jobs from a psychological and practical perspective at the same time, but Julie Morgenstern does. This book mirrors the individual consulting services she provides by showing you how to start with yourself and then tackle the more complex external issues of working relationships and the job. For every obstacle you encounter along the way, Morgenstern diagnoses the source of the problem (is it you or them?), and with insight and warmth, she provides simple grab-and-go strategies. These are small changes anyone can make to improve performance and efficiency at work. At its core, Making Work Work is about your relationship to your job. With the reliable, methodical process taught in this book, you will: • feel less trapped and more in charge • be able to make a bad situation better • search for a job that's a better fit for who you are. This is a provocative and life-changing book that will help you boost your clarity, confidence, and performance in any economic climate. With Morgenstern's guidance you can find a way to make work work. |
